Production in 2015 by technology
(Percentages over total generation)
  • Wind 83.4%
  • Hydro 10.5%
  • Solar thermal 2.6%
  • Biomass 2%
  • Photovoltaic 1.5%

Facilities outside Spain generated 4.8% more than in 2014, reaching 7,680 GWh, due mainly to production from new installations over a full year – wind farms in Costa Rica, Chile and Poland, and a photovoltaic facility in South Africa – and to the partial contribution from a wind farm in the latter.

Total electricity production from ACCIONA Energy’s own facilities in Spain – 13,195 GWh – amounted to 5% of domestic electricity demand – 163,094 GWh – according to REE’s advanced copy of the 2015 Spanish Electricity System Report.

Case Study
EL ROMERO SOLAR (CHILE)
ACCIONA’S BIGGEST PHOTOVOLTAIC PLANT

In October 2015, ACCIONA Energy commenced construction of El Romero Solar, a photovoltaic plant which it owns in the Atacama region of Chile. This is the largest energy facility of its type that ACCIONA has ever built. Commissioning of the plant, which is one of the 10 largest ever designed, will begin in the fourth quarter of 2016 and conclude in the first quarter of 2017. Specifications:

  • Capacity: 247 MWp (196 MW nominal)
  • Production: around 500 GWh/year
  • Investment: USD 343 million
  • Photovoltaic modules: 770,000 units
  • Technology: polycrystalline silicon
  • Structures: fixed (111 km)
  • Capture area: 1.5 million m2 (211 soccer pitches)
  • Emissions avoided: 473,000 metric tons of CO2 per year

Part of this plant's output will be allocated to distributors in the Central Chile Interconnected System and the remainder will feed Google's Chilean data centre.
